Nutrient-Dense Homemade Crunchwrap Supreme

Enjoy a healthier twist on the classic Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme with this nutrient-dense copycat recipe, featuring grass-fed beef and beef liver, fresh veggies, and organic tallow tortilla chips. Packed with flavor and nutrients, it’s a satisfying, wholesome alternative that’s perfect for a fun meal!

What is Nutrient-Dense Homemade Crunchwrap Supreme

A Crunchwrap Supreme is probably the most iconic item at Taco Bell, a popular fast food restaurant. It is a layered, handheld taco with a crunchy tortilla shell wrapped in a soft flour tortilla, filled with seasoned beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a creamy sauce. It is such a satisfying mix of textures and flavors.

But as you can probably guess, the ingredients and nutrient profile are not great. The flour tortilla is made from enriched wheat flour, hydrogenated soybean oil, and dough conditioners. They are certainly not sourcing their beef from a quality source and the nacho cheese sauce and tostada shell also have tons of bad quality ingredients, like soybean oil and gums.

The good news – it is actually really easy to recreate this savory, crunchy meal at home! And when you make it at home you can control the quality of ingredients and turn a junk food into a really nutrient-dense, nourishing meal!

I like to use my Hidden Liver Taco Meat to sneak in some added micronutrients, swap the flour tortillas for grain-free options, and use organic corn chips cooked in beef tallow to make sure we are only using healthy fats in this version. The end result is the perfect Taco Bell dupe that will not leave you with that intense Taco Bell tummy ache (anyone else?? Just me??).

Cook Time 30 minutes
Servings 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • ½ tbsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • 1 oz beef liver finely chopped or grated optional
  • ¾ cup fully cooked black beans
  • 4 large burrito size tortillas
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup Masa tortilla chips
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt or sour cream
  • ¾ cup shredded romaine lettuce
  • ¾ cup diced tomatoes
  • ½ cup pickled onions optional
  • 4 small tortillas

Instructions

  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.
  • Drain any excess fat, then add the garlic, tomato paste, sea salt, chili powder, cumin, and beef liver if including. Stir and cook for another minute until the mixture is well combined. Stir in the cooked black beans and set aside to cool slightly.
  • Place a large flour tortilla on a flat surface. Add ¼ of the ground beef mixture to the center of the tortilla. Top with a small handful of shredded cheese.
  • Add 4-5 corn chips to cover the beef and cheese. Top with 2 tbsp of greek yogurt, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, pickled onions if including and more cheese.
  • Add the smaller size tortilla on top then carefully fold the edges of the large tortilla over to create a sealed wrap. Make sure to tuck in any open edges to keep the filling secure.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and lightly coat with cooking oil.
  • Place the assembled Crunchwrap seam-side down in the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the tortilla is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted inside.
  • Repeat with the remaining Crunchwraps.
  • Cut each Crunchwrap in half and serve with hot sauce, salsa, or your favorite dipping sauce.
